Same-Day Edits: What Has to Be True First
A same-day edit is a short film cut during the wedding itself and played back before the night ends, usually at the reception. It is the only wedding deliverable that cannot be outsourced, cannot be rescheduled, and has a hard deadline set by the DJ.
It is also the deliverable most often sold before anyone has checked whether the rest of the day can support it. This is a list of what has to be true first.
Why do same-day edits go wrong?
Almost never because the editing is too hard. They go wrong because something upstream was not ready, and there is no time to recover.
- Footage arrives late because nobody planned card handoffs, so the edit starts an hour after it should have.
- The ceremony audio has a problem that would be fixable in a normal edit and is not fixable in ninety minutes.
- The music was not chosen in advance, so the structure cannot be built until someone picks a track.
- The venue cannot actually play the file, which is discovered at the moment it is due to screen.
Every one of those is a logistics failure rather than a creative one, which is why the fix is in planning rather than in editing faster.
What has to be true before you sell one?
Six things. If any of them is missing, sell a next-day teaser instead, which delivers most of the excitement with none of the exposure.
- A dedicated editor on site who is not also shooting. One person cannot cover the reception and cut the film simultaneously, and trying is how both jobs get done badly.
- A card handoff plan with named times. Prep and ceremony cards need to reach the edit station while the portraits are still happening.
- The music chosen and licensed before the wedding day, because the cut is built to the track and there is no time to rebuild it.
- A project template that already exists: bins, sequence settings, titles, a grade, and an export preset tested end to end.
- Redundant ceremony audio, because the vows carry the film and there is no time to rescue a failed source.
- A confirmed playback path at the venue: who owns the screen, what connector, what file format, and a test earlier in the day.
How long should a same-day edit be?
Short. Sixty to ninety seconds is a sensible target, and it is a scope decision rather than a creative limit.
A short film protects you twice. It needs less material, so a late card or a failed source is survivable, and it plays better in a loud room where nobody is sitting down. A five minute same-day edit is a much larger bet placed under much worse conditions.
What should you not promise?
Do not promise that the same-day edit is the final film, or that any specific moment will appear in it.
The honest framing for a couple is that it is a first look at the day, cut live, and that the real film comes later with everything in it. That sentence in the contract prevents the conversation where a couple asks why their grandmother is not in a ninety second cut assembled in two hours.
It is also worth saying plainly that a same-day edit is cut from whatever has arrived by the deadline. That is not a caveat, it is the nature of the product.
Where does the rest of your post-production go?
Somewhere other than the same week, because a same-day edit costs you the evening and usually the following day as well.
This is the practical argument for handing off the main film. An on-site edit is the one piece of work that genuinely has to be yours, and it is far easier to offer when the wedding highlight, the documentary edits and the social cuts are not also waiting for you on Monday.
If your queue is already behind before the wedding starts, adding a deliverable that consumes the evening makes the backlog worse rather than better.
The bottom line
A same-day edit is a production commitment disguised as an editing service. It needs a person who is only editing, footage that arrives on a schedule, music chosen in advance, redundant audio, a tested template and a confirmed screen.
With those six in place it is one of the most memorable things a studio can offer. Without them it is a public deadline you cannot move.
